Art of Love (2021)
A mysterious, erotic and haunting love story between a writer/professor at Puerto Rico's leading University and an aspiring artist from the immigrant Chinese community.
What people think about Art of Love
Art of Love is special because it treats romance like a form of inquiry: a slow, seductive puzzle where attention becomes its own kind of intimacy. Set against the humid pulse of Puerto Rico and the quieter corners of an immigrant Chinese community, Betty Kaplan’s film feels dreamy, erotic, and faintly haunted, with a narrator’s voice giving the story the texture of a remembered confession. Esai Morales anchors it with a professor’s mix of intellect and longing, while Kunjue Li brings an artist’s watchful gravity that makes every glance feel like a choice. It’s an old-fashioned love story in the sense that it believes in yearning and fate—but it has a modern twist in what it asks love to look like, and if you’re open to a languid, atmospheric drama that lingers more than it rushes, it’s easy to fall under its spell.
Art of Love wants to be a sultry, literary romance with a haunted, poetic edge, using voiceover and mystery notes to pull you into a forbidden-feeling connection across cultures and class. The problem is that the writing and characterization often feel more like a fantasy being narrated at you than a relationship you can actually believe, so the “passion” is visible on screen but doesn’t land emotionally. Performances and direction rarely add the nuance the story needs, and some viewers will find the perspective dated and a bit self-serving rather than genuinely intimate. If you’re in the mood for soft-focus moodiness, art-world intrigue, and sensual atmosphere, you may get a decent couple of hours; if you need sharp dialogue, credible psychology, and earned romance, this probably isn’t your film.
