The film’s thriller-like momentum comes less from spectacle than from the moral pressure of watching decisions harden in real time, with Kate Mara’s presence lending the tragedy a haunting weight. If you want a loud, sensational takedown, this isn’t it—but if you’re drawn to smart, measured dramas that dissect privilege and damage control with a steady hand, it’s absolutely worth your time.

Chappaquiddick is trying to be a sober, procedural look at how a single night spirals into a political crisis, focusing less on sensationalism and more on the cold mechanics of damage control. The problem is it can feel emotionally restrained to a fault: the pacing is methodical, the film keeps a tight lid on its outrage, and it doesn’t dig as deeply into the unanswered questions or the human fallout—especially Mary Jo Kopechne—as many viewers will want.
