The Untamed (2016)

The Untamed is special because it treats its wild, otherworldly hook not as a gimmick, but as a pressure valve for everything simmering beneath a “respectable” small-town life—desire, shame, hypocrisy, and violence. Amat Escalante stages it with cool, controlled visuals and a steadily tightening atmosphere, so the film feels like a domestic drama that’s been quietly infected by sci-fi horror until you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. It’s provocative in the truest sense: not just explicit, but emotionally daring, using eroticism and dread to ask what people will risk for a moment of freedom. Fair warning, the sex and nudity are very graphic and the tone is unapologetically unsettling, but if you’re open to a fearless, boundary-pushing blend of genres, it’s the kind of movie that lingers in your mind like a beautiful bruise.

The Untamed is clearly aiming for an art-house collision of social critique and body-horror, using an otherworldly presence as a blunt metaphor for repression, desire, and hypocrisy in a conservative setting. The problem is the film’s tonal cocktail—domestic drama, erotic fantasy, and grotesque creature horror—doesn’t always blend, so scenes can feel more baffling than provocative and the story can seem to drift rather than build. It’s also extremely explicit and intentionally uncomfortable, meaning if you’re not on board with graphic sex, unsettling imagery, and a slow, clinical pace, you’ll likely feel punished rather than intrigued. That said, it has striking imagery and a fearless commitment to its weird premise, so viewers who enjoy confrontational, metaphor-heavy genre cinema may find it hypnotic even when it’s messy.
