The real pleasure is how quickly it turns ordinary neighborhoods into hostile territory, building tension from tiny behavioral glitches to full-on, propulsive survival mode without getting lost in self-serious gloom. Andi Matichak and the young cast sell the fear and loyalty with an easy, believable chemistry, while the direction keeps things brisk, clean, and satisfyingly unpretentious. If you need a wildly original sci-fi concept you’ve never seen before, this may feel familiar—but if you want a lively, efficiently scary thriller that moves and bites, it’s a smart bet.

Assimilate is clearly aiming for a modern, small-town Body Snatchers-style paranoia thriller, using the “kids with a camera” setup to make the invasion feel intimate and immediate. The problem is it rarely earns the dread it’s reaching for: the acting often can’t sell the escalating fear, and the story beats feel familiar enough that you’ll see a lot of it coming. There are a few solid creepy moments and the premise is inherently fun if you like watching ordinary life turn quietly wrong, but the tension doesn’t stay sharp and the characters’ reactions can feel oddly flat.
