Hostages (2017)

Hostages is special because it turns a real, little-known chapter of Soviet Georgian history into a taut, elegantly made pressure-cooker—one that starts amid wedding finery and quietly tightens into something razor-tense. Rezo Gigineishvili shoots with arthouse poise and moral weight, so the suspense isn’t just about what happens next, but what desperation does to people who seem to have everything except the one thing that matters: freedom. The performances, especially Tinatin Dalakishvili and Merab Ninidze, give the film a lived-in seriousness that makes the danger feel intimate rather than sensational. It’s not a breezy crowd-pleaser and it asks you to sit with hard choices and moderate violence, but if you like historical dramas that move like a thriller and linger like a tragedy, this one earns your attention.

Hostages is clearly aiming for a sober, non-sensational look at privileged young Georgians risking everything to flee the Soviet system, and it treats the real-life hijacking plot with restraint rather than cheap thrills. The problem is that this calm, deliberate approach can feel emotionally distant, like the film is observing its characters more than letting you truly connect with them. If you’re expecting a tense political thriller or a fast-moving escape story, the slow pacing may test your patience and even come off oddly muted given the stakes. Still, the period atmosphere and the moral complexity are there, so it’s best suited to viewers who like quiet, contemplative dramas that let the unease simmer instead of explode.
