Wolfwalkers (2020)

Wolfwalkers is one of those rare animated films that feels hand-made in the best sense—its lush, storybook visuals and swirling, kinetic chase scenes pull you into an Ireland where the forest seems to breathe and the lines between myth and reality blur. Beneath the adventure is a surprisingly tender coming-of-age tale, powered by a fierce friendship and a father-daughter bond that’s tested by fear, duty, and the stories people tell themselves about “monsters.” The tone is enchanting but not toothless: there’s real peril, a few scary images, and emotional stakes that land without ever turning cynical. If you like animation that trusts its audience—kids and adults alike—to feel wonder and wrestle with big ideas about nature and belonging, this one will stay with you long after the final frame.

Wolfwalkers is clearly aiming for a lyrical, pro-nature fairy tale with a strong emotional core, and it mostly succeeds thanks to its striking hand-drawn style and spirited character energy. The catch is that the story beats are pretty familiar—rebellious kid, rigid parent, “monsters aren’t monsters” revelation—so if you’re hoping for a twisty plot, it may feel like you’ve seen this journey before. Its themes are heartfelt but sometimes delivered with a bit of a megaphone, which can make the message feel less magical than the visuals.
