Slumber (2017)
A sleep doctor tries to protect a family from a demon that feeds on people in their nightmares.
What people think about Slumber
Slumber takes a familiar fear—waking up trapped in your own body—and turns it into a slick, anxiety-soaked horror ride that feels uncomfortably plausible even when it goes supernatural. Jonathan Hopkins keeps the tension humming by grounding the nightmare in clinical sleep science, then letting it curdle into something ancient and predatory, with Maggie Q giving the story a steady, human center as a doctor whose professionalism can’t fully shield her from what’s coming. The vibe is moody and nocturnal, full of creeping dread rather than constant jump-scare noise, and Sylvester McCoy adds an offbeat, lived-in gravitas as the film’s guide into the folklore side of the terror. If you want a clean, neatly wrapped ending this may tease you, but if you like horror that crawls under your skin and follows you to bed, it’s a smart, nasty little watch.
Slumber is trying to fuse sleep-paralysis terror with a glossy, medical-thriller setup, and on paper that’s a solid hook with Maggie Q doing her best to sell the urgency. The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar “night demon” beats, leaning on jump scares and murky dream logic without building the kind of dread that sticks, so it can feel generic and oddly forgettable. Sylvester McCoy adds a bit of flavor and there are a few creepy nocturnal moments, but the story’s emotional angle and mythology don’t land with much punch. If you’re craving fresh horror ideas or a truly unsettling slow burn, this probably isn’t for you; if you just want an easy, late-night paranormal watch with a sleep-paralysis theme, it may do the job.
