Mean Dreams (2016)
When two youngsters meet and fall for each other, they must go on the run from the girl's corrupt father, who is also the sheriff of the town.
What people think about Mean Dreams
Mean Dreams is one of those rare thrillers that feels like a bruised poem: a young love story set against wide-open country where the beauty of the landscape only sharpens the danger lurking in it. Nathan Morlando directs with a dark-fable touch, letting Steve Cosens’ camerawork soak the Great Lakes backroads in hush and dread, while Sophie Nélisse and Josh Wiggins make the teenagers’ bond feel tender, stubborn, and achingly real. The suspense doesn’t come from cheap twists so much as the tightening sense that authority itself has turned predatory, embodied in a chilling, controlled performance from Colm Feore. It’s not a comfort watch—there’s violence, intimidation, and an uneasy edge throughout—but if you want a grounded, atmospheric thriller with real heart beating under its tension, this one sneaks up on you and stays there.
Mean Dreams is clearly aiming for a moody, backroads coming-of-age thriller about first love colliding with small-town corruption and an abusive authority figure. The problem is it often plays like a checklist of familiar “kids on the run” beats, with coincidences and plot turns that can feel more convenient than convincing, so the tension doesn’t always earn itself. If you need sharp characterization, fresh twists, or a story that feels grounded in real choices and consequences, this may leave you cold. Still, the atmosphere is suitably bleak, the young leads have an appealing sincerity, and Colm Feore brings real menace—so if you’re in the mood for a straightforward, grim ride rather than something original, it can do the job.
