Viking (2016)

Viking (2016) feels like a slab of history hewn straight out of mud, iron, and candlelight—a big, bruising epic that doesn’t romanticize the early Middle Ages so much as drag you through its brutal logic of blood law and power. Andrey Kravchuk stages the rise of Vladimir with sweeping battles, tactile period detail, and a simmering moral unease, giving Danila Kozlovsky room to play a ruler who’s compelling precisely because he’s torn between ambition, guilt, and the cost of leadership. The vibe is grim and immersive rather than crowd-pleasing, with political treachery and pagan ritual lending it a dark, almost feverish intensity. It’s not for the squeamish—violence is severe and there’s sexual content that can be hard to watch—but if you want a raw historical action-drama that aims for weight and consequence, it’s an absorbing, hard-hitting ride.

Viking is clearly aiming for a grim, prestige-style origin story of Vladimir and the birth pains of a nation, drenched in mud, blood, and brutal medieval “justice.” The problem is it often mistakes relentless misery for depth: characters can feel like chess pieces in a history lecture, and the pacing drags between big set pieces that don’t always earn their emotional weight. It’s also extremely harsh viewing, with severe violence and disturbing sexual violence that’s treated as part of the world rather than something the film thoughtfully interrogates, so if you’re sensitive to that, steer clear. If you can handle the brutality, there are flashes of epic scale, strong production design, and a committed lead performance, but don’t expect a crowd-pleasing action ride or a nuanced character drama.
