Headshot (2016)
A young man washes ashore, his memory gone - but his past comes back to haunt him after he is nursed back to health and his killing ability is needed when he takes on a powerful drug lord.
What people think about Headshot
Headshot is special because it treats action like a language—spoken fluently, brutally, and with a kind of grim poetry—so every punch, blade, and breathless scramble feels earned rather than edited into existence. Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel keep the vibe lean and ferocious, building a pulpy amnesia-thriller frame that quickly becomes a relentless descent into violence with real stakes and a surprisingly human pulse, anchored by Iko Uwais’s magnetic physical performance and Chelsea Islan’s steady warmth. The choreography is the kind that makes you wince and then rewind in your mind, not just for its precision but for its raw, exhausted intensity, as if the movie itself is fighting to stay standing. It’s not for the squeamish—this is hard-R brutality with little interest in comfort—but if you want an action-thriller that hits like a knockout and keeps coming, Headshot delivers.
Headshot is clearly trying to fuse a pulpy amnesia thriller with Indonesia’s signature, brutally precise martial-arts mayhem, and on that level it often delivers: the fights are ferocious, well-shot, and Iko Uwais sells every hit. The problem is it pads a pretty simple rescue-and-revenge story to nearly two hours, so what should feel lean and nasty can start to feel repetitive and draining. The violence is not just frequent but punishingly graphic, with a bleak “raised-as-killers” backstory that’s more grim than nuanced. If you want tightly paced plotting or a thriller you can watch without feeling battered, skip it; if you’re here primarily for relentless combat choreography and can handle the bloodshed, it’s a solid (if exhausting) fix.
