Descendants 2 (2017)

Descendants 2 is the rare Disney Channel sequel that doesn’t just repeat the formula—it deepens it, turning a candy-colored fantasy into a surprisingly relatable story about image, identity, and the pressure to be “good” for the cameras. Kenny Ortega keeps the energy high with punchy action beats and musical numbers that are genuinely tuneful, staged with the kind of pop-concert swagger that makes the whole movie feel lively and electric. The Isle of the Lost brings a grittier, mischievous edge to the sparkle of Auradon, and the rivalry between Mal and Uma crackles with style and strong, driven female presence. If you’re allergic to glossy teen musicals, it may not convert you, but if you’re even slightly on board, this one is vibrant, fun, and far more delightful than it has any right to be.

Descendants 2 is clearly trying to be a bright, high-energy Disney Channel sequel with bigger songs, louder set pieces, and a “who am I really?” arc for Mal that kids can follow easily. The problem is it often feels noisy and stretched out, with pacing that drags between musical numbers and a central conflict that can play more like sitcom-level drama than real stakes. If you’re an adult hoping for sharp fantasy-adventure storytelling or witty, layered humor, the pirate-heavy middle and constant commotion may wear you down fast. That said, the cast is likable, the costumes and choreography do a lot of the heavy lifting, and if you’re already on board with the franchise’s campy, teen-friendly vibe, it delivers exactly that.
