Wild Rose (2019)
A young Scottish singer, Rose-Lynn Harlan, dreams of making it as a country artist in Nashville after being released from prison.
What people think about Wild Rose
Wild Rose is the rare music movie that doesn’t treat ambition like a fairytale—it treats it like a bruise you keep pressing, and somehow makes that feel exhilarating. Jessie Buckley is a revelation: funny, ferocious, and aching in the same breath, she sings with the kind of raw conviction that makes you believe every bad decision and every stubborn dream. Director Tom Harper keeps the vibe earthy and alive, balancing rousing country numbers with sharp Glasgow humor and a hard-won tenderness, while Julie Walters brings a grounded warmth that turns family friction into something deeply human. It’s not a glossy Nashville fantasy and it doesn’t sand down its rough edges (the R-rated language and messy choices are part of the honesty), but if you want a big-hearted, clear-eyed crowd-pleaser with soul, this one earns its standing ovation.
Wild Rose is trying to mash up a scrappy underdog music story with a grounded drama about responsibility, and it mostly wants you to cheer for a messy, talented woman finding her way. Jessie Buckley is the real deal and the performances have enough grit to feel lived-in, but the journey can also feel familiar and occasionally a bit too tidy or “movie-shaped” to be fully convincing. The pacing is gentle rather than punchy, so if you’re expecting a big, crowd-pleasing rise-and-fall with constant musical highs, you may find it slow-going and more domestic than dreamy. If you like character-first dramas with strong singing and a bittersweet, realistic streak, it’s worth your time; if you want fresh plot surprises or full-throttle comedy, this probably won’t hit.
