Six Minutes to Midnight is clearly aiming for a tense, fact-inspired pre-WWII warning tale about complacency and creeping ideology, set in the eerie setting of an English seaside finishing school for Nazi elites’ daughters. The problem is it often plays like a conventional spy thriller going through the motions, with clunky turns and manufactured jeopardy that don’t build real suspense so much as announce it. Eddie Izzard brings commitment and a watchable central presence, and the period detail can be absorbing, but the story’s “based on truth” hook gets diluted by muddled plotting and a slightly stagey, old-fashioned feel.
