Just a Breath Away turns a familiar disaster premise into something eerily intimate, using Paris not as a postcard backdrop but as a vertical prison where every stairwell and rooftop feels like a gamble. Daniel Roby wrings terrific tension from a simple, terrifying idea—danger that pools below you—while keeping the camera close to a family whose love becomes the only reliable oxygen in a city with no answers. Romain Duris and Olga Kurylenko sell the panic and devotion without melodrama, and the film’s lean, imaginative staging makes it feel bigger than its budget, with an atmosphere you can practically taste. If you want a spectacle-first apocalypse, this may feel restrained, but if you’re drawn to smart, nerve-tight thrillers that put human stakes ahead of noise, it’s an easy one to recommend.

Just a Breath Away wants to be a tense, intimate disaster thriller where a simple high-concept threat turns Paris into a vertical survival puzzle, and on that level it does deliver some solid atmosphere and claustrophobic set pieces. The problem is the script leans hard on familiar genre beats and convenient decisions, so the characters can feel more like chess pieces than people, which blunts the emotional stakes it’s clearly aiming for. It also wobbles between family melodrama and big-apocalypse spectacle without fully nailing either, so if you’re expecting tight world-building or smart, character-driven problem solving, you may end up irritated. Still, if you’re happy to coast on mood, urgency, and a handful of suspenseful sequences rather than originality, it’s a passable one-night watch.
