Freak Show (2018)
The story of teenager Billy Bloom who, despite attending an ultra conservative high school, makes the decision to run for homecoming queen.
What people think about Freak Show
Freak Show is the kind of coming-of-age movie that dares to be loud, glittery, and sincere all at once, turning high school cruelty into a stage where bravery becomes its own kind of spectacle. Alex Lawther gives a magnetic, full-bodied performance as Billy Bloom, a kid who refuses to shrink himself to fit a town’s narrow idea of “normal,” and the film meets him with vibrant style and propulsive energy rather than dour misery. Trudie Styler keeps the vibe buoyant and colorful even as the story acknowledges real ugliness, letting its message about individuality and acceptance land with punch instead of platitude. It’s not for viewers who want their teen dramas subtle or their comedy free of sharp edges, but if you’re in the mood for an underdog story that fights back with eyeliner, wit, and heart, this one earns its cheers.
Freak Show is clearly trying to be a loud, proud coming-of-age anthem about refusing to shrink yourself to fit a conservative environment, and Alex Lawther brings enough charm and vulnerability to make Billy easy to root for. The problem is the film often settles for familiar beats and broad types instead of digging into sharper character work, so the big emotional moments can feel pre-packaged rather than earned. Trudie Styler’s direction leans into glossy flamboyance, but the tone can be uneven, bouncing between crowd-pleasing uplift and heavier bullying material without fully reconciling the two. If you want a nuanced, fresh take on queer teen life, this may feel superficial; if you’re in the mood for a straightforward, high-energy underdog story with a feel-good message (and can handle some homophobic language and a brutal assault scene), it’ll go down easier.
