Blade of the Immortal (2017)

Blade of the Immortal is what happens when Takashi Miike takes a mythic samurai premise—an immortal swordsman who can’t die even when he wants to—and turns it into a bruised, operatic action saga with real feeling under the steel. The swordplay isn’t just fast and gory; it’s staged with a brutal, almost balletic clarity that makes each clash feel like a story beat, while the film’s textured visuals and period grime give it a lived-in, haunted atmosphere. Takuya Kimura brings weary charisma and surprising tenderness to Manji, and the bond that forms between him and Rin provides an emotional spine that keeps the carnage from becoming empty spectacle. Fair warning: it’s relentlessly bloody and unapologetically intense, but if you can handle the R-rated carnage, you’ll get a grand, ferocious crowd-pleaser that swings for tragedy, catharsis, and sheer cinematic velocity.

Blade of the Immortal is clearly trying to be a grim, operatic samurai revenge saga with larger-than-life swordplay and a cursed-warrior hook, and Takashi Miike commits to that intensity without blinking. The problem is it often feels like the story exists mainly to shuttle you from one brutal set-piece to the next, and at nearly two and a half hours the pacing can drag until the violence starts to blur together rather than escalate. If you’re not already on board for relentless, graphic dismemberment and a fairly familiar revenge framework, this can feel exhausting and oddly repetitive. Still, the craftsmanship in the fight choreography and the central dynamic between the weary immortal and the determined girl give it enough bite to satisfy viewers who want maximal carnage with a streak of melancholy.
