Lansky (2021)
When the aging Meyer Lansky is investigated one last time by the Feds who suspect he has stashed away millions of dollars over half a century, the retired gangster spins a dizzying tale, revealing the untold truth about his life as the notorious boss of Murder Inc. and the National Crime Syndicate.
What people think about Lansky
Lansky is the kind of gangster film that doesn’t just chase headlines or body counts—it leans into the hush of memory, the weight of consequence, and the seductive power of a man who’s spent a lifetime controlling the story. Harvey Keitel gives Meyer Lansky a bruised majesty, all gravelly intelligence and weary charisma, making every scene feel like a negotiation between truth, myth, and self-preservation. The movie’s craftsmanship is sturdy and handsome, moving between eras with a confident, lived-in look and a cast that sells the world without straining for flash. If you want a propulsive, shoot-’em-up crime ride this may feel more talkative and reflective, but if you’re on the fence for a character-driven thriller with real gravitas, it’s an easy yes.
Lansky is clearly aiming for a reflective, end-of-life gangster portrait, using an FBI interview framework to sift myth from truth and give Meyer Lansky one last shot at controlling the narrative. The problem is it leans hard on familiar mob-movie beats, and the heavy, self-important tone doesn’t always earn the weight it’s reaching for. The flashback structure can feel choppy and oddly disconnected, which dulls the tension instead of building it, especially if you’ve seen stronger versions of this “legend recounts his life” setup elsewhere. Still, Harvey Keitel brings gravitas and a weary edge that makes the quieter moments work, so it’s best for viewers who want a solid, actor-driven crime drama—not a fresh or propulsive thriller.
