In Bed with Victoria (2016)

In Bed with Victoria is the kind of romantic comedy-drama that feels genuinely lived-in: funny in the way real life is funny, and tender in the way real life is exhausting. Justine Triet gives the genre a bracing shot of honesty and momentum, letting Paris sparkle without ever turning Victoria’s messy days into a postcard, and staging the courtroom and love-life chaos with buoyant, confident energy. Virginie Efira is terrific as a sharp, overextended lawyer teetering between control and collapse, and her chemistry with Vincent Lacoste has that rare, unforced warmth that sneaks up on you. It’s not for viewers who want a glossy, escapist rom-com—this one is frank about sex, stress, and humiliation—but if you’re in the mood for something witty, modern, and emotionally true, it’s an easy film to fall into.

In Bed with Victoria wants to be a messy, modern portrait of a burned-out single mom and lawyer trying to keep her dignity intact while her personal life becomes public entertainment, and it does capture that frazzled, painfully relatable spiral. The problem is it often plays like it’s torn between sharp satire and cozy rom-com comfort, so the story can feel conventional just when you expect it to bite, and the momentum comes in bursts rather than building. If you’re looking for big laughs, a punchy courtroom thriller, or a truly unpredictable romance, this may feel a bit too tidy and low-voltage. Still, Virginie Efira carries it with nervy charm, and there’s a wry, human sweetness in the way the film treats exhaustion, intimacy, and starting over.
