Dangal (2016)

Dangal is the rare sports drama that earns every cheer, not by manufacturing inspiration, but by letting it grow out of stubborn love, hard choices, and the bruising reality of what it takes to get good at something no one expects you to do. Nitesh Tiwari keeps the tone buoyant even when the training turns severe, mixing small-town humor and family friction with wrestling sequences that feel physical, strategic, and thrillingly alive. Aamir Khan gives Mahavir a bracing edge—equal parts maddening and moving—while Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra make Geeta and Babita’s journey feel personal rather than symbolic. If you’re allergic to tough-parent stories or don’t enjoy lots of competitive bouts, it may not be your match, but if you want an uplifting true story that feels honest instead of glossy, this one lands like a clean takedown.

Dangal is aiming for an old-school, crowd-pleasing underdog sports saga with a family heart, and it largely delivers that rousing, inspirational punch. The catch is it’s built on a very familiar “tough coach, big sacrifice, triumph at the end” template, and at nearly three hours it can feel like it’s repeating the same motivational beats and wrestling montages to get you to the finish line. Some of the drama leans a bit broad and convenient, so if you’re allergic to formula or want a more nuanced, less sermon-y true-story take, you may find it heavy and stretched. Still, the performances are committed, the training sequences have real grit, and when the emotional payoffs land, they land hard—just don’t go in expecting a lean, subtle film.
