All at Once (2016)

All at Once finds something quietly extraordinary in its premise: a young artist who steps into parenthood not by choice, but by love, and then has to live with the weight of that promise long after the headlines fade. Set against the lingering shadow of 9/11 without exploiting it, the film plays like a grounded, intimate dramedy about family forged through tragedy—messy, tender, and often disarmingly human. Jon Abrahams gives the story a lived-in sincerity, letting the humor and hurt share the same room the way they do in real life, especially as the characters try to rebuild in a hometown that doesn’t automatically feel like home anymore. It’s not for everyone—there’s strong language and some teen substance use—but if you’re open to an earnest, family-centered drama about responsibility, resilience, and the long aftershocks of loss, it’s an affecting watch.

All at Once aims for a heartfelt, post-9/11 drama about sudden parenthood, grief, and trying to rebuild a life when the bills and emotional weight catch up with you. The problem is it often leans on heavy language and messy teen behavior (drinking, smoking, drugs, running away) as shorthand for “realism,” which can feel more exhausting than illuminating depending on your tolerance for that. With very little critical consensus out there, you’re mostly taking a chance on a small, earnest film that may play more like a rough indie sketch than a polished tearjerker. If you want a gentle, uplifting story about found family, this might not be your night, but if you’re okay with a rawer tone and some abrasive choices, there’s a sincere core trying to break through.
