Jaume Balagueró turns grief, obsession, and art into a feverish mood piece where every frame seems to hide something ancient and predatory, and the story’s dream-to-reality unease keeps you leaning forward. Elliot Cowan and Franka Potente anchor the dread with a seriousness that sells the nightmare logic, while the film’s imagery makes “disturbing and beautiful” feel less like a contradiction and more like the point. If you want clean answers and conventional scares, it may feel more hypnotic than straightforward, but if you like your horror elegant, eerie, and soaked in atmosphere, this one is hard to shake.

Muse (2017) is clearly aiming for a classy, literary occult thriller—dreams bleeding into reality, art-history mythology, and a conspiracy vibe that wants to feel like horror’s answer to a Dan Brown puzzle box. The problem is it often plays like a collection of moody set pieces held together by thin character work, so the mystery can feel more frustrating than intriguing and the emotion never really lands. If you need tight logic, satisfying reveals, or a protagonist you can genuinely invest in, this may leave you cold. Still, Jaume Balagueró brings some atmosphere and a few striking images, so if you’re happy to ride on mood and concept more than payoff, you might get something out of it.
