Trench 11 (2017)

Trench 11 is the rare war-horror hybrid that feels like it was unearthed rather than invented: a WWI tunnel mission shot with such clammy, claustrophobic dread that you can practically taste the mud and metal. Leo Scherman keeps the film moving with brisk, confident direction, letting the atmosphere do the heavy lifting until the practical effects arrive with a nasty, tactile punch that never feels weightless or digital. Rossif Sutherland anchors the descent with a haunted, human performance, making the fear matter because it’s etched into a soldier who’s already been through hell above ground. It’s grim and graphically violent, so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you want a tight, mean thriller that turns history’s trenches into a pressure-cooker nightmare, this one delivers.

Trench 11 is clearly aiming for a grim WWI descent-into-hell story, mixing trench warfare claustrophobia with a biological-horror outbreak and a dash of espionage. The problem is it can’t quite decide what it wants to be—creepy slow-burn, jump-scare horror, or pulpy war-thriller—so the tone wobbles and the supporting characters often feel like bodies waiting for their turn rather than people you’ll care about. The underground setting delivers some tension and nasty gore, but it’s also visually drab and the plot beats can feel familiar if you’ve seen a few “infection in a confined space” movies. If you’re here for atmosphere, brutality, and a straightforward survival ride, it may work; if you want rich character work or a truly fresh spin on the premise, this probably isn’t your best use of 90 minutes.
