Handsome Devil (2017)

Handsome Devil is special because it takes a familiar coming-of-age setup and fills it with real tenderness, sharp wit, and the kind of hard-won hope that feels earned rather than manufactured. Set in a rugby-obsessed Irish boarding school, it captures the claustrophobia of teenage hierarchies and the liberating rush of finding one person who truly gets you, with music as the lifeline that cuts through the noise. Fionn O’Shea and Nicholas Galitzine make the central friendship both funny and fragile, while Andrew Scott brings a quietly electric warmth that nudges the story toward courage without turning it into a lecture. It does deal frankly with homophobic bullying and some rough language, so it’s not a weightless comfort watch, but if you want a sweet, poignant crowd-pleaser with a generous heart, it’s difficult to resist.

Handsome Devil is clearly aiming for a warm, crowd-pleasing coming-of-age story about friendship, identity, and finding your people in a macho school culture, and it mostly gets there on charm and good intentions. The problem is it often plays like a checklist of familiar beats—bully dynamics, big public humiliation, rousing redemption—so if you’re allergic to formula or “lesson-delivered” storytelling, it may feel a bit programmatic and heavy-handed. Some side characters are more types than people, which makes the conflict feel conveniently engineered rather than truly lived-in. That said, the central duo has an easy chemistry and Andrew Scott brings real heart, so if you want a gentle, accessible queer-leaning teen dramedy more than a sharp or surprising one, this could still be worth your time.
