The problem is the mystery plotting can get a bit soap-operatic and overstuffed, so instead of tightening the screws, the film sometimes sprawls and starts to feel longer than it needs to be. If you’re coming for a razor-precise whodunit or Farhadi at his most elegantly devastating, you may find the twists more familiar than gripping and the emotional fallout a touch undercooked. Still, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem bring real heat to the interpersonal drama, and if you enjoy messy family dynamics more than airtight suspense, it’s an engaging enough ride.
