Raw (2017)
Stringent vegetarian Justine encounters a decadent, merciless, and dangerously seductive world during her first week at veterinary school. Desperate to fit in, she strays from her principles and eats raw meat for the first time. She soon experiences terrible and unexpected consequences as her true self begins to emerge.
What people think about Raw
Raw is special because it turns body horror into a coming-of-age story with real intelligence and nerve, where every queasy moment feels tethered to something human: appetite, identity, and the terror of becoming yourself. Julia Ducournau directs with a confident, almost clinical precision, letting the veterinary-school setting simmer with dread and dark humor until the atmosphere feels like a fever you can’t shake. Garance Marillier is riveting as Justine, giving the film a vulnerable center even as it pushes into the grotesque, and the supporting cast adds a charged, lived-in energy that makes the descent feel disturbingly plausible. Be warned: it’s graphic, sexual, and unapologetically intense, so it won’t be for the squeamish—but if you want horror that’s as thoughtful as it is visceral, this one sinks in and stays there.
Raw is clearly aiming for a coming-of-age body-horror fable about identity, appetite, and the ugly side of fitting in, and it commits to that idea with confidence. The problem is it’s so relentless in its gore and discomfort that the metaphor can feel secondary, and some scenes come off more like provocation than storytelling. If you’re squeamish, hate hazing/medical imagery, or don’t want your “drama” served with cannibalistic shock, this will likely feel stressful and punishing rather than enlightening. That said, the performances are strong and the direction is stylish and controlled, so if you can stomach extreme content, you may find it oddly compelling.
