Dead Sound (2018)

Dead Sound earns its keep by taking a simple “one bad decision” setup and trapping you in it with a tight, salt-stained sense of dread that only open water can provide. Tony Glazer keeps the pace lean and mean, letting the isolation do as much work as the violence, while Jeff Kober’s menacing captain turns every quiet moment into a threat you can feel in your teeth. It’s the kind of gritty, survival-minded thriller that doesn’t pretend to be classy—just urgent, nasty, and effective, with enough raw energy to keep you watching through clenched fists. Fair warning: the gore is severe and the drug use is heavy, so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you like your action-thrillers tense, brutal, and stripped of safety nets, this one delivers.

Dead Sound is clearly aiming for a lean, nasty “wrong boat, worse people” survival thriller, trapping privileged teens with two predators and letting panic do the rest. The problem is it often plays more like a low-budget setup than a fully gripping ride: the characters can feel thin, the suspense comes in fits and starts, and the plot leans on familiar genre beats instead of surprising you. If you’re sensitive to harsh violence, heavy drug use, or the threat of sexual assault, this one will likely feel more punishing than entertaining. That said, Jeff Kober brings a solid menace, and if you can tolerate rough edges and just want a grim, contained thriller with a mean streak, it may scratch that late-night watch itch.
