Dumplin' (2018)

Dumplin’ is the kind of feel-good comedy-drama that earns its uplift the hard way: through grief, growing pains, and the brave, messy work of learning to like yourself in a world that keeps handing you measurements. Danielle Macdonald gives Willowdean a lived-in charm and stubborn heart, and Jennifer Aniston is surprisingly sharp and human as a mother whose love comes tangled up with old pageant expectations. The movie’s vibe is small-town sweet with a rebellious streak, buoyed by a Dolly Parton soundtrack that doesn’t just decorate scenes—it feels like the film’s spine. It won’t be for everyone if you’re allergic to earnestness or teen drama, but if you want something warm, funny, and genuinely encouraging without being smug about it, this one lands.

Dumplin’ is clearly trying to be a warm, body-positive coming-of-age story about grief, confidence, and a complicated mother-daughter relationship, wrapped in a small-town pageant setting. The problem is it plays things very safe: you can see most emotional beats and “big moments” coming a mile away, and the movie rarely digs as deep as its themes deserve. If you’re allergic to inspirational, crowd-pleasing formulas and want sharper comedy or messier, more honest drama, this may feel too conventional. Still, Danielle Macdonald is likable, the drag-community scenes add welcome energy, and the overall message is kind even when the storytelling is predictable.
