Gilles de Maistre lets the African landscapes and the animal’s presence do the heavy lifting, creating a warm, sunlit sense of wonder that gradually deepens into something more urgent and heartfelt, with Daniah De Villiers and Mélanie Laurent giving the story an emotional steadiness that keeps it from turning sugary. It’s also a film with a conscience: its conservation message arrives not as a lecture, but as the natural consequence of love colliding with the way humans treat wildlife. Be aware it includes a distressing hunting-related moment and the earnest tone won’t be for cynics—but if you’re open to a sincere, nature-soaked drama that wants to move you and means it, this one earns your time.

Mia and the White Lion is clearly trying to be a heartfelt, family-friendly adventure with a big message about animal exploitation, and the lion footage does a lot of the emotional heavy lifting. The problem is the story often feels like it’s forcing events to happen rather than letting them unfold naturally, with choppy pacing and “of course that happens” turns that can make the journey feel contrived and predictable.
