Lights Out takes one beautifully simple childhood fear—what might be waiting when the lights go out—and turns it into a lean, nerve-tightening ride that knows exactly how to make you look twice at every dark corner of your room. David F. Sandberg directs with crisp, confident control, using light and shadow like instruments, building suspense with smart setups and punchy jolts that feel earned rather than cheap. What elevates it beyond a haunted-house gimmick is the bruised family heart at the center, with Teresa Palmer and Maria Bello grounding the supernatural terror in something painfully human. If you’re allergic to frequent jump scares or prefer slow-burn dread, this may not be your flavor—but if you want a sharp, efficient horror film that delivers real chills with surprising emotional weight, it’s absolutely worth the switch-off.

Lights Out is trying to take a killer short-film gimmick—the monster you can only see in the dark—and stretch it into a full, crowd-pleasing studio horror ride with a family-drama hook. When it works, it’s sharply paced, has a few genuinely nasty images, and David F. Sandberg clearly knows how to stage a scare with light switches and shadows. The problem is it leans hard on repetitive jump-scare rhythms and familiar horror beats, and the more it explains the backstory, the less eerie the concept feels—plus the characters are mostly there to run, scream, and flick lights rather than surprise you. If you want inventive, slow-burn dread or deep writing, look elsewhere; if you’re happy with a brisk, noisy popcorn scare-fest that delivers exactly what the trailer promises, it’ll do the job.
