Imperium (2016)

Imperium is the kind of tense, clear-eyed thriller that feels uncomfortably current, not because it sensationalizes hate, but because it studies how it spreads in ordinary rooms and ordinary conversations. Daniel Radcliffe gives a sharply focused, quietly courageous performance, transforming himself without showboating as an idealistic FBI agent forced to live inside a poisonous undercover identity. Daniel Ragussis keeps the pacing tight and the atmosphere claustrophobic, letting the dread build from small compromises and close calls rather than cheap twists, while Toni Collette brings a steady, human intelligence that grounds the film. It’s not an easy watch—its subject matter is abrasive by design—but if you want a crime drama that’s gripping, relevant, and anchored by serious acting, this one earns your time.

Imperium wants to be a tense, ripped-from-the-headlines look at how ordinary-looking extremism becomes dangerous, and it deserves credit for tackling ugly subject matter head-on. The problem is it often settles into a fairly standard undercover-cop template, so the tension comes in fits and starts rather than steadily tightening the screws. Daniel Radcliffe is committed, but if you can’t buy him as a hardened infiltrator, the whole premise wobbles, and the third act goes for familiar thriller beats instead of cashing in on the story’s sharper moral questions. If you’re expecting a relentlessly gripping, psychologically deep descent, you may leave underwhelmed; if you want a straightforward procedural with a strong supporting turn from Toni Collette and an unsettling glimpse into extremist spaces, it’s serviceable.
