LBJ (2017)
The story of U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson from his young days in West Texas to the White House.
What people think about LBJ
LBJ is the kind of political drama that earns your attention the old-fashioned way: by putting a complicated, consequential man under a bright light and letting great actors do the heavy lifting. Woody Harrelson doesn’t imitate Lyndon Johnson so much as inhabit him—blunt, hungry, wounded, and shrewd—while Richard Jenkins and Jennifer Jason Leigh give the story a steady human center amid the backroom pressure and public history. Rob Reiner keeps the film moving with a brisk, accessible rhythm, making the machinery of power feel immediate without turning it into a lecture, and the tension of a nation in transition hangs over every scene. It’s not for viewers looking for a gentle, sanitized portrait—this is an R-rated, occasionally rough-edged look at ambition and responsibility—but if you want a clear-eyed, propulsive window into a pivotal American moment, it’s an absorbing watch.
LBJ is clearly trying to be a straightforward, accessible portrait of a towering, messy political figure—tracking his climb, his sudden promotion after JFK’s assassination, and the civil-rights pressure cooker of the era. The problem is it often settles for the safest, most conventional biopic beats, sanding down the contradictions that would make Johnson genuinely fascinating, so scenes can feel like bullet points rather than insight. Woody Harrelson brings energy and commitment, but the prosthetics and the script’s lack of nuance can keep you at arm’s length instead of pulling you into the man’s complexity. If you want a deep, thorny political character study, you may leave underfed; if you’re fine with a serviceable history-drama recap with a solid central performance, it’s passable.
