The Do-Over (2016)
The life of a bank manager is turned upside down when a friend from his past manipulates him into faking his own death and taking off on an adventure.
What people think about The Do-Over
The Do-Over works best as a breezy, underrated buddy-comedy escape hatch: two guys hit a reset button on life and the movie happily follows them into chaos with a loose, anything-can-happen energy. It’s got that sunny, slightly reckless Sandler-and-friends vibe, where the laughs come less from clever plotting and more from watching mismatched personalities ricochet through increasingly ridiculous situations. If you’re in the mood for something fun, easy, and more entertaining than its reputation suggests, it’s a surprisingly decent ride. It won’t convert anyone who can’t stand broad humor, but for the right viewer it’s a low-stakes getaway with a steady stream of gags and momentum.
The Do-Over is clearly trying to be a breezy, buddy-adventure reset button, with Adam Sandler and David Spade coasting on familiar chemistry and a “new identities, new chaos” premise. The problem is it leans hard on crude, tasteless jokes and a dunderheaded plot that keeps escalating without much cleverness or payoff, so the “adventure” feels more like random skits stitched together. If you’re hoping for sharp comedy, inventive action, or anything resembling a comeback, this will likely feel uninspired and disappointing. If, however, you just want background-level Sandler-era goofiness and can tolerate juvenile humor, you might get a few easy laughs out of it.
