The Mauritanian (2021)

The Mauritanian is the kind of fact-based drama that grabs you by the conscience and refuses to let go, turning a headline-era injustice into something intimate, urgent, and deeply human. Tahar Rahim gives a performance of startling vulnerability and resilience, anchoring a film that builds tension not with cheap twists, but with the slow, sickening weight of bureaucracy, power, and moral compromise. The tone is sober and gripping—more courtroom-thriller pulse than lecture—while still making space for flashes of humanity that hit hard because they feel earned. It isn’t an easy watch, and it shouldn’t be, but if you want a movie that’s both compelling and genuinely consequential, this one stays with you long after the credits.

The Mauritanian is clearly trying to turn a harrowing real-life injustice into a courtroom-and-conscience thriller, and the intent is admirable. But the film often plays it surprisingly safe, smoothing sharp edges into a generic, sometimes superficial drama with pacing that can feel sluggish and dialogue that rarely bites as hard as the subject demands. It also spends a lot of time on lawyers and officials, so if you’re expecting an intimate, deeply personal portrait of Slahi, you may find the focus frustratingly split and occasionally self-assured in its politics. Still, the performances and the sheer weight of the true story can carry you through—just don’t go in expecting a razor-sharp, revelatory powerhouse.
