Air Strike (2018)
An American pilot is sent to a Chinese province to teach a crew of would-be pilots how to fly war planes against the Japanese during World War II.
What people think about Air Strike
Air Strike aims for something you don’t often see in WWII cinema: a big, earnest look at China’s battered skies during the Chongqing bombings, where survival feels measured in seconds and courage comes from ordinary people forced into extraordinary roles. When the film locks into the cockpit, it delivers brisk, visually punchy aerial action with enough thunder and urgency to make you feel the chaos of dogfights and raids, while weaving in a sense of history that isn’t usually centered in Western war stories. Bruce Willis and Adrien Brody add recognizable weight, but the heart of the movie is its determination to honor a lesser-known front and the grit of those trying to keep hope airborne. It is blunt, violent, and sometimes rough around the edges, so if you need polished drama you may hesitate—but if you want propulsive wartime spectacle with a different perspective and a clear desire to entertain, it’s an easy one to try.
Air Strike is clearly aiming for a rousing WWII tribute—mixing Chinese civilian resilience with big aerial combat and a “training the underdogs” setup featuring familiar Western faces. The problem is it plays like several different movies stitched together: choppy editing, undercooked character arcs, and a narrative that keeps jumping around until the emotion and stakes start to blur. If you’re coming for a coherent war drama with strong storytelling, this will likely feel loud but oddly hollow, and Bruce Willis’s presence won’t save it. If, however, you can tolerate a muddled plot for intermittent spectacle and don’t mind severe wartime intensity and disturbing imagery, you may find a few action beats and moments of grit worth your time.
