Fatherhood is special because it lets Kevin Hart do something rarer than a punchline: he earns your trust as a real, worn-down, trying-his-best human being, and the movie builds its heart from that honesty. It’s a warm, tear-bright blend of comedy and grief, where the laughs come from the indignities of parenting and the love comes from the small, daily choices that add up to a life. Melody Hurd is wonderful as the daughter—funny, sharp, and quietly affecting—and Alfre Woodard brings the kind of grounded presence that makes family tension feel lived-in rather than manufactured. It’s a familiar story shape, and if you’re raw about loss it may hit close to the bone, but if you want a tender crowd-pleaser with genuine emotion underneath, this one lands.

Fatherhood is clearly aiming for a heartfelt, mainstream tearjerker about grief and the messy, unglamorous reality of single parenting, and it wants to show Kevin Hart in a more grounded, dramatic lane. The problem is it often plays like a checklist of expected beats—sad moment, cute kid moment, inspirational speech—so if you’re allergic to formula, you’ll feel the gears turning. The tone can wobble between sitcom-light comedy and heavy loss in a way that may not land for everyone, and some scenes can feel a bit too polished to hit as hard as they should. That said, Melody Hurd brings genuine charm, and if you want an easy, emotionally safe cry with a likable dad-and-daughter bond, it’ll do the job—even if it won’t surprise you.
