A Cure for Wellness (2017)

A Cure for Wellness is the rare modern horror film that feels handcrafted—less a jump-scare delivery system than a luxuriant, unsettling fever dream built from misty Alpine vistas, cavernous hallways, and images that linger like a bad thought you can’t shake. Gore Verbinski directs with bold, old-school Gothic confidence, letting the camera prowl and the atmosphere thicken until the “wellness” on offer starts to feel like a beautifully wrapped threat. Dane DeHaan makes a compelling guide into this polished nightmare, and Jason Isaacs brings a chilling poise that turns every calm conversation into a warning. It’s long, strange, and unapologetically grotesque at times, so it won’t be for everyone—but if you like your mysteries baroque, your sci-fi body-horror ambitious, and your dread slow-burning and sumptuous, it’s a trip worth taking.

The problem is it’s a long movie that often mistakes murky for meaningful, piling on bizarre detours and familiar genre beats until the story starts to feel more convoluted than compelling.
