Klaus (2019)
A selfish postman and a reclusive toymaker form an unlikely friendship, delivering joy to a cold, dark town that desperately needs it.
What people think about Klaus
Klaus feels special because it gives you that rare holiday-movie sensation: the comfort of a familiar myth, but told with such fresh wit and painterly beauty that it plays like a new classic you can’t believe you missed. Sergio Pablos’ animation has the warmth of hand-drawn storybooks and the depth of modern lighting, turning a bleak little town into a place you can practically feel thawing as the film goes on. Jason Schwartzman’s self-involved postman and J.K. Simmons’ quietly formidable toymaker make an unexpectedly moving duo, and the comedy lands without undercutting the genuine tenderness underneath. It does flirt with darker slapstick and a mean-spirited town vibe early on, so it’s not pure sugar, but that contrast is exactly what makes its eventual glow feel earned.
Klaus is clearly aiming to be a warm, modern origin story for Santa—part comedy, part heartfelt redemption tale—and on that level it mostly delivers. The problem is the storytelling can feel a bit busy and overly engineered, with familiar “grumpy town learns a lesson” beats and a middle stretch that drifts before it snaps back into place. If you’re allergic to sentimental messaging, tidy character turns, or a slightly cheesy holiday uplift, this may land as pretty packaging around a predictable script. Still, the animation and atmosphere are genuinely gorgeous, the voice work is strong, and if you’re in the mood for a cozy Christmas crowd-pleaser rather than something fresh or subtle, it’s an easy watch.
