Bushwick (2017)

Bushwick grabs you by the collar with the kind of street-level urgency most action thrillers only pretend to have, turning a familiar Brooklyn neighborhood into a nerve-jangling maze where every block feels like a new moral test. Shot with a scrappy, immersive style that makes the chaos feel immediate rather than glossy, it pairs Dave Bautista’s surprisingly grounded gravitas with Brittany Snow’s determined, human-scale resilience, and lets their uneasy alliance carry the movie’s pulse. Beneath the gunfire and sprinting panic, there’s a sharp political edge and a streak of dark, cheeky wit—less a lecture than an anxious question about what happens when the unthinkable becomes local. It’s rough around the seams in a very B-movie way and the profanity and violence come hard, but if you want lean, high-energy survival cinema with something on its mind, this one hits like an alarm you can’t ignore.

Bushwick is clearly aiming for a gritty, boots-on-the-ground “invasion in your own backyard” thriller, using a civil-war premise to add some social bite to the chaos. The problem is it often plays like a scrappy action exercise that mistakes constant gunfire and running for escalating tension, leaving its bigger ideas undercooked and its story beats a bit uneven. Dave Bautista brings a grounded, protective intensity and the stripped-down approach can feel immediate, but the film leans hard on harsh language and sudden brutality without always earning the emotional payoff. If you want thoughtful political sci-fi or a tightly plotted survival thriller, this may frustrate you; if you’re fine with a rough-edged, low-budget, street-level shoot-’em-up, it’s serviceable.
