A mother and her son plan a surprise visit to Los Angeles to see her husband/his father. Halfway there they get into a terrible accident in the middle of nowhere and now must fight to survive.
What people think about Monolith
Monolith takes a simple, terrifying idea—being inches from safety and still utterly trapped—and turns it into a lean, nerve-tight thriller with real emotional weight. Set in a near-future where convenience comes with teeth, it strands a mother against an indifferent landscape and an unforgiving piece of “smart” technology, and the tension comes not from twists but from watching problem after problem close in. Katrina Bowden carries the film with a raw, convincing performance that makes the desperation feel earned rather than melodramatic, so the survival beats land in your gut instead of just your adrenaline. It’s not for everyone if you hate contained, high-stress stories, but if you like thrillers that double as a human drama about resolve, Monolith is a gripping ride.
Monolith is clearly trying to be a stripped-down, high-concept survival thriller about a mother versus an unforgiving landscape and a “smart” car that’s anything but. The problem is it leans so hard on contrived decisions and convenient tech failures that you may spend more time arguing with the logic than feeling the tension, and the story stays pretty one-note once the central predicament is established. Katrina Bowden commits to the physical, desperate intensity, and the desert setting can be effectively harsh, but the character work doesn’t always earn your sympathy, which makes the ordeal feel colder than it should. If you love contained survival scenarios and can tolerate plot gaps for the sake of momentum, you’ll get a lean watch; if you need airtight cause-and-effect and layered storytelling, this will likely frustrate you.
