It Comes at Night (2017)
Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son, but this will soon be put to test when a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.
What people think about It Comes at Night
It Comes at Night is the rare horror film that doesn’t chase you with monsters so much as it tightens the room around you, turning silence, shadows, and a closed door into a vise-grip of dread. Trey Edward Shults directs with unnerving restraint, letting the atmosphere do the screaming, while Joel Edgerton and Christopher Abbott deliver performances so grounded you can feel every compromise, every flicker of suspicion, every desperate attempt at decency. The cinematography is gorgeous in a bleak, candlelit way, making the forest home feel like both sanctuary and trap as paranoia seeps into the cracks of everyday routine. If you want jump-scare fireworks, this may frustrate you, but if you’re drawn to slow-burn, psychologically sharp horror that lingers in your mind like a bad dream, it’s absolutely worth the watch.
It Comes at Night is aiming for a slow-burn, end-of-the-world chamber piece where the real monster is paranoia, not jump scares, and on that level it’s impressively tense and well-acted. The problem is it’s deliberately vague about the “threat,” and if you’re expecting clear answers, big horror set pieces, or a satisfying payoff, you may feel like the movie is withholding rather than building. The pacing is patient to a fault, with dread coming from silence, suspicion, and small escalations instead of traditional scares. If you like bleak, intimate psychological horror with strong performances (Joel Edgerton especially) and don’t mind ambiguity, it’s worth your time; if you want plot clarity and catharsis, this will likely irritate you.
