The Death of Stalin (2017)

What makes The Death of Stalin so bracing is how it turns a famously grim chapter of history into a razor-edged satire without ever letting you forget the human cost lurking under the punchlines. Armando Iannucci directs with the snap and precision of a master comedian, letting the room-temperature panic of bureaucracy become its own kind of horror show, and the writing fires off like a machine—cruel, clever, and constantly surprising. The ensemble is a feast: Steve Buscemi’s canny, cornered Khrushchev, Simon Russell Beale’s chillingly smooth Beria, and Jeffrey Tambor’s flustered Malenkov make power look less like destiny than a series of desperate improvisations. It’s not for everyone—this is dark, profane, and often shocking in its laughter—but if you can handle comedy with teeth, it’s one of the sharpest political films of the decade.

The Death of Stalin is trying to turn a historically grim power vacuum into a razor-edged farce about cowardice, ego, and bureaucratic cruelty, and it mostly succeeds on sheer nerve and precision. The problem is the comedy is pitch-black and relentless: people suffer, die, and get discarded as punchlines, so if you want your satire to feel “fun” or uplifting, this will taste sour. It’s also very talky and ensemble-driven, with rapid-fire scheming and name-heavy politics that can feel like being locked in a room with panicking officials shouting over each other. That said, the performances (especially Buscemi and Beale) are terrific, the tension is real, and if you like Iannucci-style cynicism where laughter sticks in your throat, it’s a sharp, nasty little treat.
