Loving Pablo (2017)
The film chronicles the rise and fall of the world's most feared drug lord Pablo Escobar and his volatile love affair with Colombia's most famous journalist Virginia Vallejo throughout a reign of terror that tore a country apart.
What people think about Loving Pablo
Loving Pablo is most compelling when it treats Escobar’s legend like a fever dream you can’t quite wake up from—seductive, vulgar, and terrifying in the same breath—anchored by Javier Bardem’s hulking, charismatic performance that makes power feel both intoxicating and grotesque. Fernando León de Aranoa keeps the vibe pulpy and propulsive, letting the story play like a glossy tabloid nightmare that gradually curdles into something darker, while Penélope Cruz brings a sharp, uneasy intimacy to the perspective of a woman drawn close enough to the fire to feel its heat. It’s not a tidy, prestige biopic so much as a guilty-pleasure crime melodrama with real bite, and when it hits, it’s hard to look away. Fair warning: the violence and sexual content are extremely explicit and relentless, so if you’re sensitive to brutal imagery, this one may be more punishing than entertaining.
Loving Pablo is clearly aiming for a glossy, intimate “inside the monster’s life” take on Escobar, framed through his affair with Virginia Vallejo, and it wants to feel like a dangerous romance wrapped in a crime chronicle. The problem is it often plays like a rushed highlight reel of familiar Escobar beats, with Virginia’s perspective feeling thinner than the premise promises, so the emotional hook doesn’t land as hard as it should. It’s also relentlessly brutal and explicit, and the shock-value violence and sleaze can start to feel more lurid than illuminating, especially if you’re hoping for nuance or fresh insight. Worth a look mainly for the star power and a few tense moments, but if you’ve seen other Escobar stories or you’re sensitive to graphic violence and sexual content, this one may feel like a grim retread rather than a must-watch.
