Lords of Chaos (2018)

Lords of Chaos is special because it treats the notorious origins of Norwegian black metal not as a legend to worship, but as a cautionary tale with teeth—vivid, propulsive, and unsettlingly human. Jonas Åkerlund shoots the scene with a grim neon energy, finding dark, nervy humor in the posturing even as the story tightens into a thriller about ego, identity, and the cost of turning life into an image. Rory Culkin and Emory Cohen are terrific as two young men feeding each other’s worst impulses, and the film’s performances keep it grounded even when the violence turns harrowing. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone hoping for a nostalgic music biopic, but if you can handle the brutality, it’s a compelling, sharply observed plunge into a subculture that burned too hot to stay myth.
