Siren (2016)

Siren is the kind of lean, mean midnight horror that takes a pulpy premise and treats it with enough craft and momentum to feel freshly dangerous. Gregg Bishop keeps the movie moving like a bad decision you can’t take back, mixing sleazy club neon, occult menace, and sharp jolts of creature-feature creativity into something surprisingly involving, helped along by committed performances from Chase Williamson and a wonderfully oily Justin Welborn. It’s nasty, funny in a grim way, and full of “wait, did that just happen?” turns that make it more than a standard chase-through-the-dark. Fair warning: it’s aggressively sexual and brutally gory, so if that’s not your lane, steer clear—but if you want an energetic, entertaining horror-thriller that doesn’t pull its punches, this one delivers.

Siren is clearly trying to turn a simple “bachelor party gone wrong” setup into a sleazy, mythic creature-feature with nightclub grime, occult rules, and a predator that feels more like a curse than a villain. The problem is it often plays louder than it plays smarter: scenes escalate into chaos so quickly that suspense doesn’t have time to build, and the story can feel scattershot instead of steadily terrifying. It also leans heavily into explicit sexual content and sexual violence as shock fuel, which will be a hard no for many viewers regardless of the creature mythology. If you’re in the mood for nasty, high-volume B-horror with some striking creature work and a committed lead performance, you might have fun; if you want atmosphere, psychological dread, or a concept that really develops, this likely won’t deliver.
