Christine (2016)

Christine is one of those rare dramas that feels less like a “true story” reenactment and more like an intimate, clear-eyed encounter with a real person—messy, funny in flashes, and quietly aching. Rebecca Hall gives a career-best performance, capturing Christine Chubbuck’s ambition and loneliness with such precision that you can almost feel the newsroom lights and the weight of every forced smile, while Antonio Campos directs with a steady compassion that refuses easy judgments. The film’s 1970s broadcast-world texture is vivid and absorbing, and its tension comes not from plot twists but from watching a talented woman try to outrun forces inside herself and around her. It is, however, a heavy watch that builds toward a disturbing moment, so it’s not for everyone—but if you can meet it on its own terms, it’s unforgettable and deeply human.

Christine is trying to be an unflinching character study of a talented local TV reporter trapped between workplace pressures and worsening depression, and it absolutely commits to that goal. The problem is it’s so relentlessly bleak and emotionally claustrophobic that it can feel less like a drama you’re watching and more like an ordeal you’re enduring, with very little relief or catharsis. Rebecca Hall is excellent and the 1970s newsroom atmosphere feels authentic, but the film keeps you at an intentionally uncomfortable distance from Christine, which some viewers will read as honest restraint and others will experience as cold and punishing. If you’re looking for an uplifting arc, a warm emotional connection, or even a balanced “true story” drama, this likely isn’t for you—especially given the disturbing, intense endpoint the film is built toward.
