Swinger (2016)
Munch-Fals’ script follows Adam, who has so far been spoiled by life – a good job, a lovely wife, an expensive villa, an independent son – but still it isn’t good enough. Even the swinger weekend trips he has been taking with his wife have become a joyless routine, and his youthful optimism and appetite for life are distant memories. Then, one day, at another swingers’ club, he does what swingers don’t do – he falls in love.
What people think about Swinger
Swinger stands out by treating a potentially tawdry setup with surprising tenderness and sharp, grown-up humor, using a swingers’ weekend not for cheap thrills but as a pressure cooker for longing, boredom, and the quiet panic of realizing your life no longer excites you. Mikkel Munch-Fals keeps the tone breezy and awkwardly funny while letting the emotions land honestly, and Martin Buch gives Adam a wonderfully human mix of entitlement, vulnerability, and late-blooming self-awareness. It’s the kind of romantic comedy that actually has something to say about desire and commitment, finding empathy in messy places without turning preachy. If you want escapist fluff, this may feel a bit too intimate and cringe-adjacent at times—but if you like relationship stories that dare to be candid, it’s an unexpectedly heartfelt watch.
Swinger is clearly aiming for a grown-up romantic comedy about midlife boredom, the rules of “no feelings” sex, and what happens when someone breaks them, and that premise has real potential. The problem is it often plays like a one-note setup stretched thin, with predictable jealousy beats and a tone that can feel more awkward than sharp or genuinely sexy. If you’re expecting a daring, emotionally complex look at non-monogamy, you may find it cautious and a bit sitcom-ish, leaning on discomfort rather than insight. Still, the cast brings some grounded charm, and if you’re in the mood for a mild, slightly cringey relationship farce with a Danish sensibility, it can pass the time.
