Dakota Fanning gives Wendy a grounded, lived-in presence—funny, stubborn, anxious, brave—so you’re not watching a “message,” you’re simply rooting for a person who wants something badly and refuses to be dismissed. Ben Lewin keeps the tone warm and gently observational, letting the laughs and the hard moments share the same air, with Star Trek fandom serving as a sincere compass rather than a gimmick. It won’t satisfy viewers looking for a glossy, high-stakes adventure, but if you’re open to a sweet, emotionally honest journey about autonomy and being seen, it’s wonderfully worth the trip.

Please Stand By is clearly aiming for an uplifting, Star Trek-fueled road-trip dramedy about independence, family, and being taken seriously on your own terms, and that intention is admirable. The problem is it often plays like a very familiar “quirky misadventure leads to personal growth” template, with plot beats that feel convenient, a bit sanitized, and emotionally safer than the premise deserves. Dakota Fanning brings sincerity and focus, and there are a few genuinely warm moments, especially in the way the film treats Wendy’s determination as real and meaningful. If you want a nuanced, sharply observed story about autism and adulthood, this may feel too tidy and scripted; if you’re okay with a gentle, predictable crowd-pleaser with a Star Trek wrapper, it’ll likely go down easier.
