Coin Locker Girl is the kind of crime drama that feels forged rather than filmed—hard-edged, heartbreakingly human, and pulsing with the grim poetry of survival in Incheon’s Chinatown. Director Han Jun-hee frames its underworld like a modern fable, where loyalty is a currency and tenderness is a dangerous weakness, and he lets the mood simmer in neon gloom until it boils over. Kim Hye-soo is electrifying as “Mother,” a villain you can’t look away from, while Kim Go-eun gives Il-young a steel-trap exterior that still leaves room for aching vulnerability, making every glance and hesitation feel consequential. Be warned: the violence is severe and the film is emotionally punishing, but if you can handle a ruthless thriller with real dramatic weight, it delivers a fierce, unforgettable ride.

Coin Locker Girl is aiming for a gritty, tragic crime fable about how a child is molded into a weapon, and it commits hard to that bleak, Chinatown-underworld atmosphere. The problem is it’s so relentlessly cruel and violent that it can feel less like a thriller with momentum and more like an endurance test, especially with the organ-harvesting and trafficking elements hanging over nearly every turn. Kim Hye-soo and Kim Go-eun bring real presence, and the film looks stylish in a cold, neon-soaked way, but don’t expect warmth, catharsis, or moral comfort—this is punishment cinema. If you’re sensitive to severe brutality or stories that use extreme suffering as the engine of the drama, this one is very likely not worth your time.
