What people think about It's Only the End of the World
It’s Only the End of the World is special because it turns a simple family visit into a pressure-cooker of emotion, filmed with Xavier Dolan’s bold, intimate style that makes every glance and half-finished sentence feel seismic. The camera stays close enough to catch the tremors beneath polite conversation, and the result is a hallucinatory, claustrophobic atmosphere that’s less about plot than the awful poetry of what families can’t say to each other. Gaspard Ulliel plays Louis with a quiet, haunted restraint, while Nathalie Baye and Vincent Cassel bring warmth and volatility in performances so alive you can almost feel the room’s oxygen thinning. This is a confrontational, talk-heavy drama that won’t suit viewers who want ease or catharsis, but if you’re drawn to intense, actor-driven cinema that leaves bruises in the best way, it’s hard to shake.
Xavier Dolan is clearly aiming for a pressure-cooker family reckoning, where grief and love come out sideways because nobody knows how to listen. The problem is it’s so relentlessly claustrophobic—packed with extreme close-ups, constant emotional escalation, and circular arguments—that it can feel more exhausting than illuminating, especially if you want catharsis or even a sense of progression. If you’re allergic to shrill, airless chamber dramas where the tension stays maxed out and the payoff is deliberately unsatisfying, this will test your patience. That said, the cast is excellent and the film does capture the ugly, familiar rhythm of family communication breakdowns with unnerving accuracy, so it may work if you’re in the mood for something intense and intentionally abrasive rather than comforting.
