The Chronicles of Evil (2015)
A detective accidentally kills a man and disposes of the body to protect his career. The next day he sees that someone has hanged the corpse from a crane for all to see. He takes charge of the murder investigation to protect himself and find out who did it.
What people think about The Chronicles of Evil
The Chronicles of Evil grabs you by the collar with a deliciously wicked premise: a celebrated detective makes one panicked mistake, and the city turns it into a public spectacle that he has to investigate with his own hands shaking. Director Baek Woon-hak keeps the tension tight and professional, letting the story coil with reversals and the creeping dread of exposure rather than cheap shocks, while the moral rot at the center makes every “smart” decision feel like another step onto thin ice. Son Hyun-joo is terrific as a man whose authority becomes a trap, and the supporting cast—especially Don Lee’s grounded presence and Park Seo-jun’s watchful intensity—adds pressure from all sides. If you like slick Korean crime thrillers where suspense comes from guilt, leverage, and revenge closing in, this one is an easy recommendation; if you need a hero to root for without reservations, it may feel uncomfortably gray.
The Chronicles of Evil wants to be a sweaty, morally messy thriller about a respected cop scrambling to keep his life from collapsing, and the premise is genuinely strong. When it sticks to that cat-and-mouse tension, the performances—especially Son Hyun-joo’s—keep it watchable and anxious in the right way. The problem is the movie can’t resist piling on complications: abrupt turns, choppy editing, and twist-heavy plotting start to feel like noise rather than escalation, which blunts the central mystery instead of sharpening it. If you love Korean crime films for clean, controlled storytelling, this one may frustrate you; if you can tolerate messy mechanics for a few solid suspense beats and a dark ethical hook, you’ll get something out of it.
